Mexico Part Uno

We made it across the border last Saturday night (actually, anyone with a couple of $US could have made it over the border – the guy just got on the bus and asked us all to “push the green button”! Probably a bit harder to go back… ;o)

We took a bus to Nogales, where we crossed the border, then another to Los Mochis and a third to El Fuerte. We stayed in the most gorgeous authentic hacienda in El Fuerte, which was just so full of character. Here’s a picture, but there are more here too.

On Monday we got the Copper Canyon Railway from El Fuerte to Chihuahua, which took 13 hours, but was fantastic. While we were waiting for the train, I made friends with a cat who started scratching my bag. I managed to persuade him to stop and eventually he went to sleep at my feet. The first of (hopefully) several lolcatz!
“ME HAZ YOUR BAG, I CAN HAZ SLEEPZ!”

We had nice comfy seats with no-one sitting opposite us, there was a bar and a restaurant and the views were great – waterfalls, rapids, rivers, bridges, mountains, cactuses (cacti?!) – marvellous! The train stopped for about 15 minutes at a little village with stalls and another great view of the canyon.

In Chihuahua we took a stroll around the old town and the cathedral and had an ice lolly in the park (total cost for 2 = 5p!), then we took another (20 hour!) bus to Mexico city. We met a very helpful bus official who we both thought looked a lot like Bunk from The Wire (Duncan – give us your verdict)..?

More soon, love Gude x

The hacienda looks wonderful and I love a train journey. Better than the old overnighters to Venice? Great to hear all’s well. Big hugs. Love mum xxxxx

    Gude,
You’re rivalling Michael Palin for documenting the travellers tales. It’s so lovely to hear what you’re up to and see your pictures.
    Sending you big hugs

Yes, you would have loved the train mum – 13 hours in 1st class for £85 each – much better value than Virgin!
